Red Velvet Hot Chocolate

Red Velvet Cake is one of my absolute favorite indulgences.  I found this recipe for Red Velvet Hot Chocolate on Adventures in the Kitchen. I’ve added some modifications that I’ll be making so that it’s dairy-free and a bit healthier.  This looks like a yummy treat for Valentines Day.

Red Velvet Hot Chocolate (see my modifications in parenthesis below for a non-dairy healthier version)

What You’ll Need:

4 cups whole milk (can also use any non dairy milk such as coconut or almond – make sure it’s unsweetened)
1 cup heavy whipping cream (or can use cashew cream – click here for the recipe)
1/4 cup sugar (or 1/8 cup of agave nectar or 1/4 c of honey)
2 tsp. red food coloring
1 cup chocolate chips (or roughly chopped organic dark chocolate)
3 tbsp. cream cheese (could use additional heavy cashew cream in place of cream cheese)
Cocoa powder for garnish
1/4 tsp. sea salt


  1. Pour the heavy cashew cream or regular heavy whipping cream into a mixer and start mixing. Then add the sweetener (sugar, honey or agave) and mix for 3-5 minutes until just before it begins to form stiff peaks.
  2. Add either the cream cheese or additional cashew cream and mix for 3 more minutes on medium speed.  Can place it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.
  3. Heat the whole milk or non-dairy milk in a saucepan on medium heat and mix in the chocolate and salt ensuring that you stir continually. Once it’s all combined and completely warmed add the food coloring and stir.
  4. Top with additional whipped cream cheese or cashew cream and sprinkle with cocoa powder.
